Dominica Dive Fest- Day 6

Dive fest is Dominica’s premier introduction to the variety of water based activities available on the island. Dominica is currently listed as the top diving destination for small animal encounters.  I participated in their Annual Wine Tasting Cruise that offers participants samples of 6 wines while cruising along the southeastern shore of Dominica. We departed from Roseau at 6 in the evening to cruise to Scott’s Head and back.   The natural elements aligned themselves this evening to provide the perfect climate to take an evening stroll on the Caribbean Sea.  It was truly surreal as the boat slowly sailed from the port of Roseau. It felt as if we were embarking on a new adventure. The boat accommodated about 85 persons which made it more intimate like you were among friends going on a sail. Everyone bubble with excitement as views of the dramatic heights of green landscapes gave more grandness to the occasion. You could tell that everyone was anticipating having a good time.
Observing Dominica from the sea, one may recreate the voyage the Carib Indians made within the Caribbean Sea to reach this magnificent destination. I could just imagine one of the carib’s catching a glimpse of Dominica’s grand mountain tops perfectly surrounded by clouds as he shouts with excitement to his fellow explorers, “ I see land, my friends!”   I can feel their energy right now as I gaze upon the simple and natural elegance that they island ultimately represents.  A majority of this island still remains untouched, therefore it is no wonder why Christopher Columbus would still recognize this island if he were alive today.  I found it a bit difficult to express the immense amount of emotions and thoughts that are being created just by viewing Dominica from the Sea, so I have included a video clip in hope that it will more appropriately sum up the matter.

While on broad the soft sounds of Sade provided an excellent source of relaxation as the first round of wine was placed for tasting.  Three of the wines that were particular flavoring was the Rose from St Jean D’oc of France, the Malbec”Los Cardos” from Dona Paula of Argentina, and the Cabernet-Sauvignon from Vin de pays D’oc  of France.  I was unable to sample all 6, because I was very tipsy after the third glass. As the sun set, the wine’s flavor settled into the mouths and hearts of everyone on board. The DJ mixed up the beats to offer the crowd tunes that would move their feet.  The moon hidden behind the mountain and clouds of Dominica made the sea appear pitch dark in nature.  The winds are rushing at accelerating speeds as they flow swiftly across the sea offering the ultimate breeze for everyone’s enjoyment.

On board, Kelvin shares why he is on the wine cruise today.

The Wine Cruise was made possible by Dive Dominica and Pirates Ltd. Dive Dominica offers excellent whale watching tours plus snorkeling and diving packages. The owner Daniel Perry relates some excellent areas for Diving in Dominica. If you want more information about their packages visit divedominica.com.

Before and during the boat cruise, two first time visitors one from Washington D.C. and the other from Japan share their impressions of Dominica.

An excellent event that truly celebrates the Dive Fest mission, I look forward to being a part of next year’s Wine Tasting Cruise. I hope that you may want to be a part of this exceptional Wine Tasting Cruise. A Toast to a great Dive Fest Event!

  1. Hi Olivia - I'm so glad you enjoyed your trip to Dominica! That's where my mother's family is from. Daniel Perryman of Dive Dominica is my cousin and he's done such a wonderful job of promoting the undersea wonders of Dominica. Thank you for sharing these glimpses of one of the last unspoilt islands in the Caribbean.
